Pictured Rock
September 16, 2011

Soon we’ll be doing a full write-up on Pictured Rock (Munising Michigan) over at The Earth is Mine, but I was inspired to put this photo up today for the Twitter #FriFoto “Stone” theme.
This photo was taken from a boat at Pictured Rock Lakeshore in Munising Michigan. While the scale is hard to tell from this shot, the cliff itself was over a hundred feet in the air. The colors are made when the water hits the different types of minerals found throughout the rock face. Over time the minerals are washed down, usually in streaks. Occasionally the softer limestone will collapse and take away the outer layers, leaving a fresh wall to be repainted.
