Pseudo-Resolutions

January 07, 2009

Apparently I turn 27 today. It took me half of the year to remember I was 26, but that’s alright because the other part of the year was spent thinking I was already 27. In a sense it’s almost like I gained a year of my life back.

Nevertheless, I think at this point in my life I can start identifying with all of those people throughout history who have searched in vain for the fountain of youth or something like it. I’m definitely not saying that I’m “old”. I’m just starting to realize how quickly things happen in life. (When you’re 6 years old your birthday seems to come once every 2 years.)

With my birthday this close to New Years I think I’m going to make some pseudo-resolutions today. They are not New Years resolutions …since I have never kept one of those before. Here they are in no particular order:

Take it Easy on Papyrus and Zapfino

Honestly, I have maybe been a bit harsh in the past about them. Not that I’m saying my mind has changed about them or that I’ll be using them anytime soon… Just that probably I could cut back on mentioning them. Plus, some people have a different opinion about them, and that’s okay. But sometimes I have spoken too aggressively and isolated people. This probably applies more to Photoshop brushes, so consider them mentioned here as well.

Of course, now that I have written that down I’ll start seeing those fonts more frequently, just watch…

Use My Camera More Often

Even as I write this my camera is sitting next to me, motionless. I took a few photos earlier this week for an upcoming article but they haven’t even made it onto the computer yet. Most of you who come here for the photo of the week have probably already noticed that it hasn’t been done lately. Updating the photo of the week goes along with this resolution.

Shoot in RAW Format

I’ve started using the RAW format when taking photos and I must say that I have not been disappointed. Sure, I can’t fit as many on my memory card and they are a bit harder to work with than a JPG… but they are probably the best thing that’s happened to digital photography.

Write More Articles That Matter

I’ve been guilty in the past of writing passively. I’ll get more into that in an upcoming article that I’m still revising… To quickly summarize though, articles I have written here have not always been as entertaining or as useful as I had hoped, and I think I have figured out something that’s going to help that. But again, I’ll write more on that later.

Twitter Less

What? No, seriously. I had a habit last year of Twittering everything regardless of quality. The thing that brought it to my attention was when some of my real life friends I have known for quite awhile stopped following me, presumably because I updated too much. Soon I’ll be pulling Twitter onto this website which will force the issue at hand. How unprofessional does it look when your website has, in big letters “This pizza is amazing!” (Not that I have or would actually write that…)

Comment More

I have always been very selective and somewhat shy about where I leave comments on the web, and that’s probably about to change. If I really care about the subject at hand, or it helps me in some way, then I should be contributing back to the conversation. It’s just what should happen.

I could probably keep going, but I’ll end here. I am interested in hearing what has been helpful to the people who read this site. If you feel like giving your feedback I would love to hear it, feel free to send me an email. I’d like 2009 to be a landmark year for this site.

Happy birthday man! I never keep New Years resolutions either, so I never make them. Usually my New Years “resolution” is to make no resolutions. I guess in that regard I actually keep one a year…

Anyway, you’re always welcome to comment on my barren blog. =) I should make a psuedo-resolution to post more often, but it just won’t happen.

Thanks Ben. One year I gave up things like arson and burglary. I’m happy to say that year I did in fact keep my resolutions.

I’ll probably take you up on your offer to comment on your site more often. That photo you have on there right now is just amazing. It makes me want to travel.
